Measuring fun

To help us learn more about our mystery dinosaur fossil we measured different parts of its body using wool. We then looked around the studio to see if we could find anything the same length as its toe, tail, head and leg.
The dinosaur's head was the same length as Osten's hand.
The tail was nearly as long as Alex's leg.

We also measured the length of the dinosaur and found out it was the same as our metre ruler. We measured all around the studio to see where the dinosaur could hide if it was still alive today.
The tent was too small.

We discovered that the mystery dinosaur could hide
- under the lego table
- behind the iPad cupboard
- behind the whiteboards
- under the jellybean table
-behind the big TV
and behind and in front of the couch.

If the Dinosaurs Came Back

We read 'If the Dinosaur came back' by Bernard Most.
We then made our own books using book creator on the iPad. We learned how to use the camera function and recording function.

Ti Kouka we need your help

We have been sent a fossil all the way from Germany. The palaeontologists need our help to work out what kind of dinosaur it is.
We have taped it off and it will be waiting for you to examine on Monday.

She-Can Code

On Friday all the girls at Halswell School went to the hall to participate in a She-Can Code session. The aim is to get as many girls coding as possible. This is a NZ competition, with the largest group winning a prize.

Boys Science Fun

While the girls were coding in the hall, the boys from Huritini went out onto the courts to do science experiments with Otaumatua.

We put sugar and baking soda in a tray.

Then Miss Dovey carefully added a special ingredient and lit the sugar.

We carefully watched what was happening using our observing muscles.

Henry thought it looked like poos coming out of the ground.
Ivan thought it looked like moving worms.

The boys predicted if we touched the burnt pieces, it would be hard like a rock. Once it had cooled down we touched a small bit and it was really soft like ash.
Our next experiment was a blast...
We experimented with 5 different types of fizzy drink to see which one would explode the most.

We added menthos lollies to the fizzy bottle and waited to see what would happen. This fizzy bottle only exploded a little bit.

Osten got to pull the cord on this fizzy bottle and it exploded the biggest. Luckily he didn't get wet!

Magic Wands

On Wednesday we decided we needed a bit of magic in the studio.

Catherine helped us to make some wands.

It was fun finding all kinds of bits and bobs to put on them.

Thanks for helping us Catherine!

How Long is a Dinosaur?

On Wednesday T10 watched a YouTube clip about how long dinosaurs are.

We went out and used metre rulers to measure how long the different types were.
